Dental Implants – Case Presentation

A patient resurfaced approximately 5 years without receiving any comprehensive dental care.  Clinical and radiographic exam showed upper left and right posterior teeth were failing due to decay and bone loss.  Therefore, the upper left teeth were extracted with simultaneous lateral window sinus augmentation.  This procedure was completed to achieve adequate bone height and width for dental implants.  The patient was allowed to heal for approximately 6 months.  Three Straumann bone level dental implants were placed and allowed to integrate into the newly formed bone.  After abutment placement, the patient was referred to her OKC general dentist for restorative treatment.  This case presentation is a good example of how properly placed implants by a board certified specialist can provide patients with a esthetic and functional way to replace failing teeth.

Sinus Elevation Literature Review

Maxillary sinus floor elevation using the lateral window technique is a well-documented and reliable procedure to increase bone height in the posterior maxilla to allow the placement of dental implants of optimal length.  This is based on data for one year or more after prosthetic loading were included in 85 studies.  These studies reported on 4,807 atients with 14,944 dental implants inserted in augmented sinuses.  Survival rates were 88.6% to 100% (mean: 97.7%) after 12 to 107 months of prosthetic loading.  Sinus elevation is required in sites where initial bone height is limited and does not allow implants of the desired length to be placed.
