Treatment of a Gum Deformity – Oklahoma City

A patient was referred to me by her oklahoma city general dentist for treatment of a gum deformity, recession, and inflammation.  I diagnosed the patient with a mucogingival deformity / lack of keratinized gingiva and recession located in the lower right quadrant.  Pt. reported a dental history of constant inflammation and swelling with pain.  The area was treated with a Free Gingival Graft in order to gain an adequate amount of keratinized gingiva and root coverage.  Resolution of the gum deformity was noted after six weeks of healing without any continued complications.  As a board certified Periodontist, I recommend early diagnosis and treatment of these soft tissue deformities is critical to obtaining optimal results.

What are Gum Deformities?

Deformities of the gingiva and alveolar mucosa, which are usually referred to as mucogingival problems, are associated with a large variety of conditions that affect a large number of patients.  Epidemiological data are available only for some conditions. Gingival recession occurs in populations with both high or low oral hygiene levels.  It was observed in 60% to 90% of Norwegians, depending on age, and in 30% to 100% in parallel cohorts of Sri Lankans.  Drug-influenced gingival enlargement is associated with administration of cyclosporin (13% to 85%) and calcium channel blocking agents (20% to 44%).  Pull syndrome (a detaching movement of the marginal gingiva transferred from the lip by the frenum) is associated in 100% of papillary types of frenum.  Causes and factors that may contribute to gum deformities include some developmental, traumatic, infectious, and neoplastic factors.  In addition, certain mucocutaneous diseases and some medications can result in the formation of mucogingival deformities.
